In our “Seed Award Spotlight” series, we asked the Fall 2024 Seed Award winners about their experience as a food or farm entrepreneur, including the passion behind their business, and their vision for positive change in their community. This January, 18 Seed Award winners were chosen to receive seed funding totaling almost $250,000. These grants represent not just financial investment, but an acknowledgment of the vital role farms and food distributors play in advancing Michigan’s food value chain.
One of these remarkable awardees is Anavery Fine Foods, rooted in the rich soil of The Weinrich Farm in Traverse City, Michigan. Anavery Fine Foods is not just a farm; it’s a commitment to high-quality, sustainable agriculture. Led by first-generation farmers who left their big city jobs for a life on the land, Anavery specializes in heritage breed animals, offering ethically raised meat, poultry, and eggs. Their dedication to regenerative farming ensures that every product is not only delicious but also ethically produced, supporting the local economy and the environment.

What does being selected as a Seed Award winner mean to you personally, and how does it reflect on the journey of your business so far?
Receiving the award is a confirmation of the years of hard work and personal investment we have put into our farm and distributor. It is an affirmation that our goal of bringing local meat to local people can succeed.
In what ways will the Seed Award funding support your immediate and long-term business goals?
The funding will help us continue to move up the meat value chain. This increases the resilience of our business by ensuring that we can find markets for every part of every animal.
Can you share your vision for the positive changes this award will enable you to make in your business and the broader community?
The investments resulting from the award will allow us to contribute another source of quick-preparation meals to local families. It will help us expose our community to a greater variety of traditional Chinese foods.
What led you to start your business? What motivates you to do what you do?
We started our farm to serve our community and to demonstrate that meat can come from animals raised with dignity and care.
