In the most recent award cycle, Michigan Good Food Fund distributed nearly $300,000 in seed grants to 18 Michigan-based food and farm businesses. These investments extend beyond capital support, recognizing the essential role these enterprises play in strengthening Michigan’s food system, advancing equity, and supporting long-term economic growth.
Among them is Radical Plants, a creative plant-based food company born from founder Melissa Heath’s search for a flavorful vegan sauce, a kitchen experiment that blossomed into a line of beloved Superdips now enjoyed across Michigan. ¿Qué significa para usted personalmente haber sido elegido ganador del Premio Semilla y cómo se refleja en la trayectoria de su empresa hasta la fecha?
Being selected as a Seed Award winner is incredibly meaningful to me, both personally and as the founder of Radical Plants. This recognition feels like a moment of validation after years of showing up day after day, often in very tough circumstances, to build something that reflects my deepest values—kindness, compassion, and the belief that good food can change lives.
Radical Plants began as a tiny operation in a church basement kitchen, born from my desire to align my entrepreneurial spirit with my ethics as a long-time vegan. Since then, the journey has been anything but linear. We navigated the loss of our distributor during COVID, shifted into retail to survive, and worked tirelessly to build Michigan’s only all-vegan market—one that nourishes our community, supports small makers, and proves that plant-based food can be delicious, accessible, and fun.
To receive the Seed Award at this point in the journey feels like a milestone that honors every step it took to get here: the late nights, the financial pressures, the reinvention, the resilience, and the unwavering belief that this work matters. It tells me that others see the value in what we’re creating—our mission, our impact, and our potential for meaningful growth.
Personally, this award gives me a renewed sense of momentum. It reminds me that I am not doing this alone and that Radical Plants is part of a bigger movement toward healthier people, a healthier planet, and a kinder world. It fuels my determination to keep expanding access to plant-based foods, strengthen our systems, and grow into a business that can continue serving and inspiring our community for years to come.
¿De qué manera apoyará la financiación del Premio Semilla sus objetivos empresariales inmediatos y a largo plazo?
The Seed Award funding will allow us to take an important next step in expanding Radical Plants’ reach. With this support, we’re able to purchase the equipment needed to increase our prepared food offerings and to place branded refrigerators and shelf displays inside select local businesses. These small “mini-mart” footprints will help us meet customers where they already are, test demand in new neighborhoods, and build a scalable model for future expansion. In the long term, this investment lays the groundwork for bringing accessible, plant-based options to more communities while strengthening the foundation for our larger growth plans.

This award helps accelerate the positive change we’re already working toward—both within Radical Plants and in the community we serve. As I shared earlier, our mission has always been to make plant-based food more accessible, welcoming, and part of everyday life. With this support, we can offer more fresh, healthy meals, reach new neighborhoods through small in-store placements, and introduce more people to the idea that eating plants can be joyful and easy. My hope is that these changes create a ripple effect: strengthening our business, supporting local partners, and making it simpler for people to choose foods that are good for their health, the planet, and animals

I started Radical Plants because I wanted to create a business that aligned with my values as a long-time vegan and my belief that food can be a powerful force for good. What motivates me every day is knowing that we’re helping people discover delicious plant-based options that support their health, the planet, and animals. Even on the hard days, the mission keeps me going—the chance to make kindness, compassion, and good food more accessible in our community.
